Cornea Bank Greifswald

Together with the Tissue Banks in Schwerin and Rostock, the Cornea Bank Greifswald supplies patients in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and throughout Germany with tissue transplants.

The Cornea Bank Greifswald is part of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Ophthalmology in the University Medicine. It looks back on a long tradition: The eye bank was founded at the beginning of 1993 and was thus the first cornea bank in the new federal states. Since 2007, the Cornea Bank Greifswald has had a cooperation agreement with the DGFG: All donated corneas are transferred to transplanting hospitals and doctors via the DGFG network. The Cornea Bank Greifswald prepares the donated tissue. Senior physician Dr. Dorothea Hübner, ward physician at the eye clinic, has been the responsible person since 2001. Sebastian Kruschke and Nadine Zehm ensure that the tissue donations can finally be sent to the surgeons. They are responsible for the corneal preparation and the administration of the cornea bank.

Sebastian Kruschke measures the size of a donated eyeball.

The cells of the cornea are counted here.

Sebastian Kruschke processes the donor cornea – the donation becomes a transplant.
